Abstract:

Cyberspace is getting connected more than ever through software (and hardware) technologies. These technologies are enabling us to virtually stay closer to one another even if we are physically distant in this pandemic. Unfortunately, however, this also means that we are close to potential attackers who are looking to exploit vulnerabilities in software systems. In this talk, I will introduce you to the world of software security research by first showcasing some motivating examples of recent, highly-publicized attacks, such as a recent zero-click attack demonstrated on flagship smartphones like iPhone 11 Pro. I will then discuss some of my latest research efforts to improve the security of real-world software, using a variety of techniques including, but not limited to, systems, compiler, and machine learning techniques.
